After World War I the German economy was destroyed because it had to pay for war reparations. This caused the government to print extra money. They printed so much money that they experienced inflation so badly that one American dollar was worth millions of German dollars. The money was so worthless that people used it as wallpaper, ate it because it contained food products, and people would bring buckets of money to buy cheap items from the store.
