Close to the earth the old man was. This is where his comfort level is. Feeling the warmth of the earth beneath his hands and knowing that the grass will grow, he is ahead of himself by cutting realizing that he no longer, with his bad knees able to use a mower. He also knows that his appreciation for nature comes from cutting one blade at a time. He has the time now that he is retired. Time is all he has at time. This reminds him of his youth and he tries to recapture those days each time he is close to the earth. The smell, the texture..taking the time to cut each blade. He runs his fingers through the blades. His activity makes him forget his sore knees. He notices the blue sky ready to bring in the sun to give new life to the earth. How many years, as told in his saved news, he has done this as he waits to pass through to the other side. How he loves busy work… He used to work at that bench making beautiful things all of the time. Now, things are different, but he can still cut the grass. The desire to be active creates wonderful alternatives to the norm. No machine for him……He adapts an cuts with the scissors. Do my friends and neighbors thing I have lost it? No I have gained…the ability to adapt as I age and make the losses of my projects into new ones.
