Lesson #3 Acting Shakespeare

Cape Henlopen High School  Lewes, DE

Banquo from Macbeth

“Macbeth shall never be vanquished until Great Birnam Wood to high Dunsinane Hill shall come against him”

“That will never be- who can impress the forest, bid the tree- unfix his earth bound root?”

The hags have given a prophecy. One my murderous, one time friend has fulfilled. A self- fulfilled prophecy. He has brought it all upon himself. They handed him a map to greatness; power he never knew he could attain. It has driven him mad. A monster, once a great and noble man, believes himself a great and noble king. Or not. Perhaps he knows what he’s become. The map they handed him has holes. It is not leading to his treasure, but to mine own. He believed that ending me would save his crown. But it has been stolen from him. In killing me, has  brought on the wrath of my son. “Thou shalt get kings”- it seems that I have. The betrayal of Macbeth had such force that it could move mountains. Or forests…as Fleance shall do. If only he could see what he has done- not to the kingdom, but to himself. The plan he was handed…it has been followed perfectly...straight to the end. His downfall shall come from Birnam Wood. I have seen it all, as I am no longer of their world. Macbeth knows not what can move a tree from its earth bound root- but he will.
