The Rescue
Madeline is trying to be very quiet. She knows not to make any noise when she is locked in the closet. Mommy has told her that it is dangerous to make a peep and she must be as quiet as a church mouse until mommy comes back to let her out. Madeline tries to breathe out her nose, but it’s so musty in the closet with all the dust bunnies, that she has to take a quick gulp out through her mouth. She has to pee, but she is trying to hold it as long as she can. She feels so guilty when she messes herself. Then she is wet and cold too. She hopes mommy comes to let her out soon.
Far off, Madeline hears the doorbell ring. She freezes like a rabbit not even daring to breathe. Are those the bad people mommy has told her about? The doorbell seems to go on and on forever, but it finally stops and Madeline remembers to breathe again. She feels wet and she realizes that she has peed herself without ever realizing it. Now mommy is going to be really upset that she has to clean up that mess. She silently begs mommy to come and let her out. She really doesn’t like being in the dark, but it’s better than the bad people getting her.
Suddenly Madeline hears voices. Oh no! That’s not mommy’s voice! She has never heard those voices before. The voices are getting closer and closer to the closet. “I’m telling you, there is a child in here somewhere,” she hears someone say. Suddenly footsteps stop in front of the closet. The doorknob rattles.
Poor Madeline is shaking; she has never been so scared. “The door is locked from the outside,” a voice says. Suddenly Madeline is blinded by the light. Her eyes are too used to the darkness. As someone reaches down to pick her up, she starts screaming and can’t stop. This is very, very bad. Mommy is going to be terribly angry. She hears a voice say, “I told you that woman was keeping her child home alone.” Madeline is still screaming as they carry her out of the house.
